Commanders’ defensive depth chart: 6 quick takeaways

Six quick takeaways from the Washington Commanders’ first 2025 defensive depth chart.

The Washington Commanders revealed their first depth chart of the 2025 season ahead of Sunday’s season-opener against the New York Giants.

What are some of the designations that catch our attention? Let’s start with the offense. Here are six items that caught our eyes from the defensive depth chart.

Von Miller

The Commanders list 12 players as starters, though only 11 can do so. The Commanders did the same thing last year, listing Dante Fowler as an OLB. This time it is Von Miller being listed as an OLB, when we all know he is only going to be a situational pass rusher.

New starters

Commanders’ new defensive starters in 2025 who did not start opening day 2024 are listed as: DE Deatrich Wise, Jr, DT Javon Kinlaw, CB Marshon Lattimore, CB Trey Amos, and S Will Harris.

Second-year DT Jer’Zhan Newton

DT Jer’Zhan (Johnny) Newton begins the season again, not starting. In 2024, he was behind Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. For the 2025 opener, he is listed behind Payne and Javon Kinlaw.

CB Noah Igbinoghene

Noah Igbinoghene, who was reportedly being shopped by the Commanders last week, is listed as the backup inside/slot corner behind Mike Sainristil.

LB depth is a concern

Linebacker depth is a real question. The first two backups listed are Jordan Magee, who needs to stay healthy and on the field this year, and Nick Bellore. We don’t yet know how well rookies Kain Medrano and Ale Kaho will play, nor how ready they are for the NFL. Bellore primarily plays special teams.

Deebo and Lane are the returners

New special teams specialists for 2025 are listed as K Matt Gay, KR Deebo Samuel, and PR Jaylin Lane.
