The Most Romantic Scent a Person Can Wear, According to Charlotte Lawrence

When Charlotte Lawrence was writing her song “Ballerina” for her 2025 debut full-length album, “Somewhere,” she had no idea that an invisible string was being tied from it to her first-ever fragrance campaign. The partnership is with Sam Edelman, coincidentally also for its first-ever fragrance, “Duet.” As a brand known for its shoes — specifically, ballet flats — it only makes sense that the premiere scent be encased in a rose gold dance slipper-shaped vessel.

“I remember when Sam Edelman first asked me the face of this perfume and told me about the bottle,” Lawrence tells Fashionista. “I was in the middle of finishing my album and had just finished this song. I even have a tattoo of a ballerina on my arm. It just felt kismet.”

Like most people, Lawrence’s familiarity with the brand started with its famed flat styles: “I’m obsessed with all of Sam Edelman’s ballet shoes and have had them in my closet forever, since before I ever worked with them. So it just felt right and they used my song ‘Ballerina’ in the campaign, which was so awesome.”

Although the soft and feminine energy of balletcore is something the 25-year-old singer and actor embraces (particularly when wearing this floral, bright perfume), she balances it out with the cool-girl approach to her music, appearance and attitude for which she’s become known. “When I get all dressed up for something fun, I like to have some funky makeup,” she says. “I have a pretty good level of confidence. I feel pretty good about myself and I’m happy about who I am, what I look like and the person that I am. So I kind of just wake up feeling good.”

As she basks in the success of her record and takes center stage as a newly minted beauty ambassador, Lawrence sat down with Fashionista to share the routines that make her feel her best, including everything from the skin-care best-seller she credits for her clear complexion to the nostalgic scents that bring her back home.

What types of scents are you typically drawn to?

It really depends on my mood, but I’ve always loved floral scents growing up. My mom wore a gardenia-based fragrance, so that was my favorite flower. This perfume, “Duet,” has notes of gardenia in the middle and you can really smell it after it settles for a second. I also love musky scents because they feel a little bit masculine, and I think that’s really sexy — especially on top of very floral, light, sweet notes.

What about this new Sam Edelman fragrance attracts you?

I choose my scents based on the feelings and emotions I have when I wake up, and lately I’ve been really wanting to feel strong, powerful, confident, sexy and womanly, and I feel like “Duet” is a really great scent for that. It’s a mixture of sensual and light beauty, but also musky cedarwood. It feels right and exciting when I wear it.

What are your favorite non-perfume smells?

I have so many. I’m obsessed with fresh laundry and outdoor scents like gardenia, lavender and the smell of grass after it rains. I love the smell of wet paint — I wouldn’t wear it as a perfume, but I love it. Same with Sharpies, but maybe that’s just because I’m messed up in the head. I love golf cart gasoline. Not normal gasoline, but golf cart gasoline hits just right.

I also love the smell of Banana Boat Sunscreen. And my dog’s paws — they smell like Fritos and I really like that. I could keep going.

What’s the most romantic scent you can smell on another person?

When I think of romance, I immediately think of something a little bit stronger and darker, like a candlelit dinner with roses everywhere. Very sexy, kind of old glamour. So, probably a floral, musky scent.

Is there a smell that feels nostalgic to you?

The ocean is really nostalgic for me. Salt water and salty air. Whenever I smell a shirt at my house that my mom left there — meaning I stole from her — I smell the perfume she wears, which makes me feel nostalgic.

Is there a song of yours that best represents “Duet?”

“Ballerina” represents this perfume and the campaign. I wrote the song for my cousin, who’s so special,  about how when they grow up, they’re going to be confident and feel as beautiful as they are. It represents a strong, powerful person who really loves themself. This perfume meshed with that message really well.

Walk us through your skin-care routine.

I do not have a daytime routine. I only do nighttime. I wash my face every night, no matter what — no matter how tired or drunk I am. I use Youth To The People Superfood Face Wash. Then, I have this Dermarssance Highprime Collagen Film Mist. I use it religiously.

I also use Rhode a lot because it’s really light and dermatologist-tested. I use the Glazing Milk and the Barrier Butter Intensive Moisture Balm. I literally use that cream 100 times a day. I credit that to why my skin has gotten more consistent and smooth.

What’s your makeup routine like? Do you have any go-to products?

I really don’t wear makeup. I rarely leave the house with makeup on. I like to just let my skin breathe throughout the day and only wear it at nighttime for events and things. Then, I like to have more fun with it. I do love the Fenty Beauty concealer, and Valentino Beauty’s Eye2Cheek stuff is really good. I also use a YSL Beauty red lip. Those are my staples. Plus, a Tom Ford mascara that I’m always carrying.

What is your hair routine like?

I use the Laura Polko shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. It’s the best. She’s a hairstylist and we’ve worked together many times. She’s absolutely incredible. She knows what it takes to make something that’s actually great for your hair. Mine has gotten so long since I started using her products, and it smells so good.

I never use heat on my hair unless I’m going to an event and I’m getting it professionally styled.

Do you have any beauty secrets that people might not know about?

I use Aquaphor every second of the day. Anytime that it looks like I’m wearing lip gloss, it’s just Aquaphor. I’m obsessed with it. I also don’t touch my eyebrows. I’m never gotten them waxed before. I’ll tweeze a little hair here and there, but I think it’s best to stick with your natural brows. I’m not a hater, though. If you want thin, bleached or shaved brows, fucking go for it.
