Four things Georgia football fans should know about Austin Peay


The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs play the Austin Peay Governors on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. ET in Week 2 of the 2025 college football season. The Georgia-Austin Peay game will be televised on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.

Most fans watching the Georgia-Austin Peay game will be tuning in to watch Georgia, but Austin Peay is off to an excellent start. Last week, the Governors beat Middle Tennessee 34-14 for their second win over a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in school history.

Following Austin Peay’s win over Middle Tennessee, coach Jeff Faris made it clear that they weren’t going to bask in the glory.

“My message to this team is that we have to be the most improved team in the country from week one to week two,” Faris said. “That’s our challenge. Can we handle the success? I am excited to see the way we come back to work tomorrow.”

Speaking of challenges, Austin Peay has to travel on the road to play Georgia. The Bulldogs are among college football’s elite and command a lot of respect. Georgia has the longest home winning streak in the country at 32 games.

What are four things to know about Austin Peay?

Austin Peay’s QB is an SEC transfer

Austin Peay played two quarterbacks in their win over Middle Tennessee. Mississippi State transfer Chris Parson threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns in their upset victory.

Austin Smith also played for the Governors. He scored a rushing touchdown and started for them in 2024. Smith, a fifth-year senior, began his career at Eastern Michigan.

First FBS win since 1987

Austin Peay’s win over Middle Tennessee gave the Governors their first win over an FBS opponent since 1987. Austin Peay is 0-1 in school history against Georgia. The Governors lost to UGA 45-0 back in 2018.

By the numbers: 2-31

Despite the win over Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay is just 2-31 against FBS opponents in program history. Georgia is another level of challenge than Middle Tennessee and is expected to dominate Austin Peay.

Austin Peay State University information

Austin Peay is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, and is approximately a one-hour drive from Nashvillle. Clarksville has a population of over 180,000 and is the fifth-largest city in Tennessee. As of the fall of 2024, Austin Peay had over 10,000 students. The school is named after Tennessee governor Austin Peay (1923-1927) and has a significant population of military-affiliated students.
