Picking the Steelers superlatives for the 2025 season

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off the regular season when they travel to take on the New York Jets. Both teams have given their rosters a major overhaul in hopes of making a dent in the AFC. For the Steelers, they handed out a ton of big contracts to new players and existing vets, so expectations are high. Let’s hand out some predictions for the Steelers ‘ end-of-season awards. Remember, the rules are the same. No player can win more than one award.

Team MVP – QB Aaron Rodgers

This team is going to be exactly as good as Aaron Rodgers is. Rodgers is highly confident in himself and his teammates all share that confidence in him. If it all lines up, a huge season is incoming.

Offensive Player of the Year – WR DK Metcalf

Pittsburgh has bet big on DK Metcalf being the answer at wide receiver and he has the confidence of Aaron Rodgers. Metcalf’s career-high in receptions is 90 and we expect him to match that in 2025.

Defensive Player of the Year – EDGE T.J. Watt

The Steelers gave Watt a massive new contract this offseason and now we expect him to earn it. Watt had 11.5 sacks in 2024 but should be shooting for a much bigger number in 2025.

Offensive Rookie of the Year – RB Kaleb Johnson

We went with Johnson here largely because there just aren’t many options. In fact, there isn’t another option. The Steelers don’t have another offensive rookie on the depth chart which is bizarre.

Defensive Rookie of the Year – DT Yahya Black

We are banking on Black taking advantage of fellow rookie Derrick Harmon being out and performs well enough to earn significant reps all season.

Newcomer of the Year – S Juan Thornhill

In the preseason, Thornhill was the tone setter on defense and we fully expect that to continue as he takes over for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Breakout Player of the Year – WR Roman Wilson

We love what we’ve seen and heard about second-year receiver Roman Wilson and can’t wait to see what he does this season. He and Calvin Austin III are going to battle all season for the No. 2 receiver role and we are betting on Wilson.

Biggest Disappointment of the Year – CB Darius Slay

I don’t think Slay is going to be awful but I don’t expect him to live up to the hype when he was signed and I don’t think he is going to play better than Joey Porter Jr. or Jalen Ramsey.

Comeback Player of the Year – LB Cole Holcomb

If I hadn’t named Roman Wilson my Breakout Player of the Year, he’d be in the running here but you can’t go wrong with Holcomb. He’s made it back from a horrible injury that might have cost him his career.

Coach of the Year – Special teams coordinator Danny Smith

I wish I had enough confidence in one of the other coordinators or head coach Mike Tomlin to consider them but the most effective and consistent coach on the Steelers staff is Smith.
