Andrea Rosso was born to work at Diesel. As the son of Diesel Founder Renzo Rosso, he recalled sleeping inside the Italian luxury label’s warehouse when he was young, playing alongside the machinery with his brother Stefano (now CEO of Marni) and stitching his first pair of denim at just 12 years old.
“I grew up inside the world of Diesel,” Rosso told Fashionista’s Brooke Frischer on The Fashionista Network. (Watch it here!)
Decades later, Rosso now serves as the sustainability ambassador for OTB, the parent company for Diesel, Jil Sander, Marni, Maison Margiela and more. He developed a penchant for sustainability early on, as he grew up watching clothes be constructed from scratch and formed a love for all things vintage and secondhand to mold to his personal style. In his sustainability ambassador role, Rosso first set out to educate consumers (and the internal company) on what sustainability means and what it looks like in practice.
In 2024, Diesel won the Award for Circular Economy presented by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation for its work on integrating circular economy principles into its business by reducing waste in the product development process and repurposing materials. To mark a Diesel product as sustainable, Rosso noted that the company needs to consider how much water it takes to produce a product when it comes to the material and its treatment. Its sustainability measures also touch upon the brand’s trims and product packaging.
“Think about also longevity of the product,” Rosso said. “You need to have a product you want to have every day, and if you want to have the product every day, also you’re willing to pay the money that they deserve.”
In the full interview, Rosso also shared a glimpse into Diesel’s responsible fashion process, the biggest sustainability issues facing the fashion industry today, his advice for those just entering the fashion world and his sustainability goals for OTB over the next five to 10 years.
