There’s a new arrival at the club who could help discover the next Andy Robertson.

It’s clear there is no long-term future for Kostas Tsimikas at Anfield. He will be gone on a permanent deal next summer when his loan move expires at AS Roma.

If Robertson was to leave, which is a possibility given he has not signed an extension, Liverpool will likely look to bring someone in.

There are some talented young left-backs at the club. Owen Beck, on loan at Derby County, is very highly rated. 16-year-old Cameron Williams is well thought of, too. He’s an U18 player and has already trained with Scotland’s senior national team.

But neither will be ready to deputise for Kerkez. Which is why Liverpool have to enter the transfer market if they want to find a back-up option.

And this is where the club’s newly recruited Scandinavian scout, Jasper Vallmark, could come in very handy because there is an exciting talent in Sweden who could become the next Robertson.

19-year-old, Keita Kosugi plies his trade for Djurgardens and he’s already on the radar of some of Europe’s major clubs.

This should come as no surprise, considering according to CIES’s data, he’s the best-performing teenager in Scandinavia at the moment.

Kosugi is small in stature but he’s a very dynamic full-back. He can bomb up and down the pitch and use his low-centre of gravity to beat opponents.

He’s also very technically gifted. He’ll make clever and smart passes and can look to progress the ball from deep, averaging close to nine progressive passes per 90 minutes.

Kosugi is a smart-dribbler, too. He completed 61.16% of his 2.6 attempts which is the third-best return among all Allsvenskan players who have averaged at least two dribbles per 90 minutes and played 2000 minutes in the last calendar year.

So far this season, Kosugi has also showcased the defensive qualities in his game. He won 29 tackles (72.5%), made 17 interceptions and 79 recoveries.

His defensive awareness and physical qualities are what makes him suited to Liverpool the most. Kosugi is quick. He has the speed to impact the team in attack but he can also make recovery runs, similar to Kerkez.

At the end of the day what Arne Slot will want as a back-up is someone similar to the Hungarian and Kosugi is exactly that. He’ll deliver crosses, beat players going forward and he’ll at the same time be very consistent and solid in his defensive side of the game. This season, he ranks sixth for the most successful defensive actions (10.53 per 90) in the Allsvenskan.

If Liverpool are looking for their next Robertson, Kosugi is a transfer that makes sense. Like Robertson at Hull City, he is a raw but he has exciting potential and he won’t be very expensive.

It’s the type of transfer Liverpool have recruited Vallmark to find, and maybe the club’s new Scandinavian scout will unearth the gem that Kosugi is for the Reds.

The Japanese teenager is definitely a player to keep an eye on.
