Last-Minute Kentucky FG Provides Bad Gambling Beat: ‘Sorry to a Lot of Gamblers There at the End’

For many, Kentucky’s last-minute field goal with eight seconds left to seal a 30-23 loss to Ole Miss on Saturday meant very little. To sports bettors, it meant a lot.

According to BetMGM, Kentucky entered Saturday’s game as a 10-point underdog versus Ole Miss. For a lot of people who bet Ole Miss -10, they were looking good for at least a push when the Rebels kicked a 36-yard field goal with 1:10 remaining.

Then, Kentucky went on a drive. Instead of icing the game, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin called a timeout with 13 seconds left, leaving Kentucky the chance to kick a field goal. Kentucky kicker Jacob Kauwe promptly hit a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds left to leave many bettors happy and others devastated.

“Sorry to a lot of gamblers there at the end,” Kiffin said postgame during the ESPN broadcast.

How Kentucky Got There

Kentucky trailed Ole Miss 30-20 with 1:10 remaining when the Cats started their final drive at their own 25-yard line. Led by backup quarterback Cutter Boley, UK was able to drive down the field.

Boley completed a 38-yard pass to Hardley Gilmore to get to the Ole Miss 21-yard line. Ole Miss called a timeout with 13 seconds left, leaving Kentucky with a choice: go for it or kick the field goal.

Kentucky chose to kick the field goal, which cut the point deficit to seven. UK didn’t see the ball again.

The reason for Kiffin’s apology is simple. If he hadn’t called a timeout, UK wouldn’t have had the chance to kick the field goal. He did, UK kicked the field goal, and Ole Miss bettors were left with a loss.
