Cowboys reportedly decided to trade Micah Parsons a week before he demanded to be moved

Green Bay Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons sent the NFL world in a tizzy when he officially demanded a trade from the Dallas Cowboys. What Parsons didn’t realize at the time was that he was already pretty close to getting his wish.

The Cowboys reportedly decided to trade Parsons a week before he went public with his demand, according to Fox insider Jay Glazer.

Dallas reportedly put out feelers to other teams to gauge interest in the 26-year-old before he made his desires public. The Cowboys were hoping to ship Parsons away to an AFC team, but reportedly “could not get any traction” on that front, per Glazer.

Over in the NFC, however, Parsons drew interest. While the Packers ultimately wound up with the star — who they then signed to a massive four-year, $188 million contract — it was the Philadelphia Eagles who offered the biggest package to Dallas. The Eagles were reportedly willing to part with two first-round picks, a third-round pick, a five-round pick and “other things,” according to Glazer.

Dallas wasn’t willing to trade Parsons within the division, opening the door for the Packers to secure the pass rusher. The Packers were reportedly in on the bidding for Parsons early, and set themselves apart from other teams by being willing to offer Kenny Clark to the Cowboys.

The relationship between Parsons and the Cowboys deteriorated rapidly over the course of the offseason. While it appeared to be a standard contract dispute most of the summer, things turned ugly after Parsons went public with his trade demand. At one point, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones went on a 24-hour media tour, slamming Parsons and his agent at every opportunity.

With the season just around the corner, the relationship appeared broken, resulting in Parsons being traded. While all of that happened surprisingly fast to everyone not directly involved in the situation, Sunday’s report suggests the Cowboys had been considering a trade far longer than the NFL world expected.
