Bulldogs’ sideline reaction reveals belief and execution after dramatic finish

For much of the night, Mississippi State held control. But after Arizona State clawed back to grab a late lead, Davis Wade Stadium braced for heartbreak. Instead, the Bulldogs delivered one of their most thrilling wins in recent memory.

Three voices stood out in the aftermath , head coach Jeff Lebby, quarterback Blake Shapen, and receiver Brenen Thompson. Each described how belief and execution fueled the stunning 58-yard strike that sealed the upset.

Lebby praised his defense’s resolve before the play: “There’s none prouder than finding a way to hold them to a field goal at the two-yard line… We got plenty of time to go play because of how we do play.”

Shapen explained what he saw pre-snap: “There should have been a post safety in the middle of the field, but I guess he shaded more to the boundary.” His read opened the lane for the game-winner.

Thompson, who caught both of Shapen’s touchdowns, recalled the moment vividly: “Then it was just catch it and run as fast as I could to the end zone. I could just hear the cowbells ringing so loud.”

Mississippi State now holds momentum early in the season, proof that belief, even in tense moments, can turn the impossible into reality.
