Reds outfielder Will Benson crashes into wall making catch vs Padres

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Will Benson made an impressive catch as he crashed into the wall at Petco Park to end the 2nd inning of the second game of a series against the Padres in San Diego, but he remained down on the field for several tense moments before sitting up with help and being helped to his feet.

Benson walked off the field under his own power with medical personnel and several teammates, while holding his neck. He was able to remain in the game.

“He has the ball!” Fanduel Sports Network play-by-play announcer John Sadak said during the broadcast. “He made the out. And he gave up the body, and you hope he’s okay. He’s slow to get up. The inning is over. But Benson still grimacing noticeably as he lept up and crashed into that fence. … He hit his head right against the padding. And you can see that neck snap. That is scary. Trying to make the play and he did. … That did not look good.”

“And I think as an outfielder, you have a general expectation that when you go airborne as Will did there that you’re trying to absorb the blow with your back,” analyst Jeff Brantley added. “But in that situation the padding extended further from the wall, it snapped his chin toward his chest then the back hit the wall.”

“It’s a little odd to see that padding jut out so significantly,” Sadak added as Benson was helped to stand up. “And thank goodness he’s walking under his own power.”

Benson homered during the top half of the inning. He was making his first start since early August.
