One of the more intriguing players within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization is forward Easton Cowan. The 20 year old Ontario native is considered by many to be the top prospect in the Leafs system.

In a year where the Leafs lineup has openings amid roster turnover, ice time will be available. With that said, there will be competition aplenty for spots. Easton Cowan is one of those players who hopes to make the team and assert his position on the squad.

Toronto coach Berube recently made some interesting comments on Cowan's game and his chances of making the team in an interview with The Athletic.

What did Berube have to say about Cowan?

Berube had nice things to say about Cowan, acknowledging the former London Knight's talent. Cowan scored 29 goals and 40 assists for 69 points in 46 regular season games with the Knights last season. In London's OHL championship playoff run, he tallied 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points in 17 games. He also helped the Knights win the Memorial Cup.

Overall, Cowan's skill is undeniable. But, Berube would go on to reference the flaws in his game that need work. Craig mentioned Cowan has "gotta change" in certain areas to earn a lineup slot. The areas in question are his all around game. Cowan's ability in the offensive zone is apparent, but his defensive game could use improvement. This was clear during the latest World Junior tournament with Canada as Cowan experienced some struggles in the defensive zone.

Cowan will no doubt have an opportunity to push for a spot in the Leafs rotation this season, but he will have to win over his coach first in training camp.
