Commanders’ news and notes ahead of Week 2: Will Tress Way play?

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn met with the media on Wednesday to discuss some news and notes ahead of Thursday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Given the short week, Quinn understandably wanted to keep things brief, convey his information in response to the questions asked, and use his time as wisely as possible. As Quinn closed his time with the media, he wished each of them safe travels to those traveling to Green Bay for Thursday night’s challenge at Lambeau Field against the Packers.

Here a few updates from Quinn ahead of Thursday Night Football:

Week 2 captains: TE Zach Ertz, LB Frankie Luvu, LB Nick Bellore (special teams)

“These are some fantastic leaders. They’ve impacted our team, our locker room, in a lot of ways.”

Sept. 11

Quinn also communicated that he had taken time to speak to his team Wednesday about “the remembrance of 9/11 tomorrow. It was a good day to teach. That was my first year in the NFL during 9/11, 2001. I just kind of talked about how 24 years ago, the world stopped, and football did too. I also tell them they are part of a really big fraternity because football also helped heal the country. I just wanted them to know that, and what an honor it is to play tomorrow, and a real honor to coach these guys.”

Will Tress Way play?

Though the Commanders signed a punter, Mitch Wishnowsky, to the practice squad, Quinn stated the concern for punter Tress Way is lower now, and that Tress hit the ball well on Wednesday. Quinn said he expects Way to punt in Green Bay.

Odds and ends

  • With the short week, Quinn said coaches are emphasizing communication and understanding of roles against the Packers. Trying to find a positive, Quinn said he tries to embrace the chaos that is an NFL short week.
  • Quinn spoke about players’ roles at running back, wanting to give them reps, and that he really likes Austin Ekeler making plays in space.
  • Being essential to form a team identity early, Quinn said, the team is not there yet. He said he is looking more at the how, the finishing of plays, and the toughness. He wants to see physicality and overcoming of mistakes; if it doesn’t happen, it has to be formed.
  • Quinn stressed he knows execution won’t always be there, but he is looking for the effort and the techniques that are taught.
