Birkenstock 1774 Launches Becomes Berlin Collection Inspired by 1920s

Birkenstock 1774 is turning to the cultural ferment of 1920s Berlin for its latest seasonal release.

The new Becomes Berlin Collection, created by the brand’s Paris-based creative studio, revisits house icons with details drawn from the city’s period of artistic and architectural experimentation.

The line spotlights Art Deco buckles and subtle cutouts across a set of core silhouettes. The Arizona appears in velvet black and lavender, while the London and Maria come in suede cream and deep burgundy. Each pair is finished with metallic fastenings that echo the decorative language of the era.

Birkenstock notes that the designs reflect a historical moment defined by both political flux and creative renewal. In the Maria Suede and London Suede, subtle adjustments in proportion and detailing mirror the inventive approaches of the era’s designers, while Arizona and Florida styles incorporate bows and textile treatments that nod to Berlin’s thriving avant-garde scene.

This release continues a year of steady experimentation for the 1774 division, which operates as Birkenstock’s design-forward arm. In April, the studio unveiled the Arizona CosNy sandal in durable nylon with magnified proportions, followed in May by a collaboration with Maharishi on the outdoor Mogami Terra Tech. Both projects emphasized new materials and contexts for the brand’s archival forms.

The Becomes Berlin collection, however, takes a more cultural approach, layering historical references onto silhouettes that remain central to Birkenstock’s identity. The Arizona, introduced in 1973, and the Boston clog, which has surged in demand among younger consumers, are among the brand’s most consistent sellers. Reworking these models through the lens of Berlin’s modernist past allows Birkenstock to reinforce both continuity and reinvention.
