LT Trent Williams out of another Week 2 practice

The San Francisco 49ers’ practice participation report from Thursday came with a significant red flag on the injury front.

As the injury problems stack up to include tight end George Kittle, quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receiver Jauan Jennings, another potential issue has sprouted up.

Left tackle Trent Williams was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s session because of a knee injury, as well as his typical veteran rest day. He was once again a non-participant Thursday, bringing his availability for Week 2 into question.

Williams dealt with an injury in the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks. He missed one snap and seemed to be laboring throughout the game. Pro Football Focus credited him with a team-worst six pressures allowed.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday didn’t indicate Williams was due to miss more than one day of practice. His absence Wednesday and Thursday doesn’t mean he won’t suit up Sunday, but it is notable that he isn’t practicing at all after suffering an injury in Week 1.

Spencer Burford would be the team’s starting left tackle if Williams can’t start Sunday in New Orleans. We’ll learn more about Williams’ status on the Friday injury report. Shanahan will also be available to give an update in a press conference after Friday’s practice.

Here’s the full Thursday practice report:

Did not participate

  • WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder)
  • QB Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe)
  • LT Trent Williams (knee, not injury related – resting player)

Purdy is almost certainly out for Sunday’s game. That Jennings has also not suited up for practice isn’t a great sign for his availability Sunday.

Limited participation

  • LG Ben Bartch (knee, elbow)
  • DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
  • RB Jordan James (finger)
  • WR Jordan Watkins (ankle)

Good news for Gross-Matos here after he missed Wednesday’s practice. James and Watkins were inactive in Week 1. Watkins could play a real role in Week 2 if he’s back in action and Jennings isn’t available.

Full participation

  • DE Nick Bosa (not injury related – resting player)
  • QB Mac Jones (knee)
  • RB Christian McCaffrey (calf, not injury related – resting player)
  • RG Dominick Puni (knee)

It’s a great sign for McCaffrey that his calf issue isn’t hindering him after a game where he had 31 touches.
