Rams will add to CB room after Ahkello Witherspoon injury, per McVay

The Los Angeles Rams’ cornerback room lost a key member when Ahkello Witherspoon broke his clavicle in Week 2.

While the Rams are hopeful the veteran will return later in the 2025 season, L.A. might need to add another player to that unit. Only Emmanuel Forbes Jr., Cobie Durant and Darious Williams remain on the active roster, as well as versatile defensive backs Quentin Lake and Josh Wallace.

Head coach Sean McVay confirmed the team will “bring somebody” in after Witherspoon landed on injured reserve. However, he didn’t elaborate on if it would be an internal addition (via the Rams’ practice squad) or an external one (via a trade or free agency).

The Rams could promote one of two cornerbacks from their practice squad in A.J. Green or Cam Lampkin. Both have experience in Chris Shula’s defense, but there’s a reason they weren’t one of the five cornerbacks to make the 53-man roster for Week 1.

There are several external options to consider as well in free agency, including veterans like Stephon Gilmore and James Bradberry. Both are older and could be more expensive, but the Rams have around $16 million in cap space to use as needed, per Over the Cap.

The final option is by trade, but that seems unlikely this early in the season unless a team is ready to move on from a player in a lost season. It may be too early for teams to give up, though.

Either way, the current Rams depth chart at cornerback won’t remain the same with Witherspoon out for at least 12 weeks.
