The New York Spring 2026 runways have come and gone, and as the first official stop of September fashion month, it’s given us some early hints as to what fashion will look like in the upcoming year.

Some trends are more familiar, having been brewing over the last few seasons, like headscarves and shades of light blue. Others are a little less expected, like aprons and necklace bags. And then there are the inevitable nostalgia-fueled comeback trends including genie pants and shrugs.

Keep scrolling to see all the biggest trends to come out of the Spring 2026 shows at New York Fashion Week.

Calming Blues

Lighter blues in the baby/cornflower/sky family brought touches of serenity to the Spring 2026 runways. The calming color made up head-to-toe looks at Jane Wade, Prabal Gurung and Tanner Fletcher, while Tory Burch paired pale-blue tops with brown bottoms — an excellent combo.

Functional Necklaces

Necklace bags, a trend we recently spotted in Copenhagen Fashion Week street style, popped up on the Coach and Michael Kors runways in New York. Tory Burch offered up smaller necklace containers (could maybe fit a pill or two?), while TWP’s necklaces held reading glasses.

Genie Pants

A new-old pants silhouette has entered the chat. Billowing genie pants, which can also be referred to as harem pants, parachute pants, balloon pants and bubble pants (can we get a consensus please?) are blowing up (pun intended). No doubt influenced by the ones Pieter Mulier designed for Alaïa’s beloved Spring 2025 collection, a slew of New York labels co-signed the trend — including Altuzarra, Michael Kors, Ashlyn and Patbo.

Headscarves

After cropping up the last few seasons, headscarves emerged as the go-to hair-topper at NYFW Spring 2026. The accessories brought a little extra authenticity to the boho-chic looks at Anna Sui and R13, but they also paired well with Calvin Klein’s clean minimalism and Sandy Liang’s ultra-girly, childlike outfits.

Shrug it Off

A shrug (or bolero) resurgence has been brewing ever since the rise of ballet-core circa 2022. And it’s officially here, at least if the New York runways are anything to go by. But interestingly, no two designers really took the same approach when it came to these cropped arm coverings. We saw voluminous ruffled versions at Aknvas, bold fur ones at Christian Cowan, off-the-shoulder knits at Eckhaus Latta, an underboob-revealing denim iteration at Tyler McGillivary and structured leather boleros at Khaite.

Lacy Legs

Lace continues to be an extremely popular fabric choice for New York designers; what feels new — and, at the same time, very ’80s — is how several used it for tights and capri-length leggings.

Tunic Time

As high-rise pants fall out of favor, so do the cropped and fitted tops with which they were often styled. Shirt hems are getting lower just like our waistbands, and tunics — i.e. long, typically loose-fitting tops — are having a resurgence. There’s a chic effortlessness to the style, which can lean bohemian and vacation-y like at Anna Sui and Sloan; or luxe and sophisticated as seen at Proenza Schouler, Fforme and Marina Moscone.

Waist Management

Speaking of waists, New York designers have been finding creative ways to adorn them this season, and we’re not talking about belts. There are the stylish little waist aprons at Eckhaus Latta and Allina Liu, exaggerated cummerbunds at Brandon Maxwell and Collina Strada, bold waistbands in contrasting colors at Diotima and Cynthia Rowley, garter-belt details at Christian Cowan and bohemian scarves tied ’round the midsection at Anna Sui and Kim Shui.
