Insider gives update on Lakers-Heat Andrew Wiggins trade talks

Early this summer, there were reports that the Los Angeles Lakers were looking to trade for Miami Heat two-way wing Andrew Wiggins. However, the talks eventually died out because apparently, Miami was asking for more than the Lakers were willing to give up.

In recent days, multiple reports have indicated that those talks have been resumed, which has coincided with a couple of reports that the Lakers are in win-now mode and are willing to take on future salary in order to acquire a two-way wing such as Wiggins.

But according to insider Brett Siegel, the Heat continue to ask for a future first-round draft pick, something L.A. isn’t willing to give up, and that overall, they would rather keep Wiggins for now.

“Since he was traded to the Miami Heat, Wiggins was involved in a lot of trade chatter this offseason,” wrote Siegel. “Those same rumors from July have once again surfaced before training camp and the preseason, specifically involving the Lakers’ longstanding interest in the 3-and-D wing.

“Right now, the Heat don’t hold much of a desire to trade Wiggins and are operating under the mindset of waiting to see how things play out during the first few months of the regular season, sources said,” wrote Siegel. “Miami has held a high asking price for the former first-overall pick, one that the Lakers haven’t been willing to meet.”

Wiggins could be the type of two-way wing who would elevate L.A. from a playoff team to a legitimate championship contender. A former No. 1 overall draft pick in 2014, he averaged 18 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range last season.

He was the second-best player on the Golden State Warriors when they won the NBA championship three years ago. They traded him to Miami in February in a blockbuster trade that brought them six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler.
