The Dodgers (87-67) clinched their 13th straight postseason berth Friday night with a 6-3 win over against the rival Giants (76-78). The offense picked up their ace Clayton Kershaw in his final regular season start at Dodger Stadium.
It was bittersweet as Kershaw made his 450th start of his career and final regular season start at Dodger Stadium in front of a packed crowd.
Many of us have followed the great No. 22 along his reign of dominance over 18 seasons in Dodger Blue. It’s been a career filled with iconic moments and highs and lows.
We felt the disappointment of World Series rings lost, fateful pitches that fueled seasons-long narratives, and Kershaw’s reinvention after age and injury.
We felt the glory of Kersh finally overcoming those postseason demons and raising the World Series trophy overhead for the Dodger fans. The unforgettable no-hitter in 2014, the Triple Crown, the MVP Awards, Cy Youngs, All-Star games, Opening Day 2013 home run and Maddux, Dodgers’ strikeouts record in 2022, and this season Kershaw became the 20th pitcher to throw 3,000 strikeouts.
Heliot Ramos ruined the good vibes after Kershaw stepped on the mound in front of his family, former teammates and friends with a leadoff solo home run to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead.
Public Enemy No. 1 had to play a role tonight.
An error at third base by Kiké Hernández extended the 23-pitch first inning, but Kershaw didn’t let things get out of control.
Miguel Rojas, also a veteran, got the Dodgers on the board with a two-out game-tying home run in the bottom of the second inning against fellow left-hander veteran Robbie Ray.
Andy Pages hit a booming double to center field to give the Dodgers consecutive extra-base hits versus Ray.
The Giants retook the lead the next inning after Matt Chapman doubled, and Wilmer Flores singled him home to make it 2-1. In the fourth, Kershaw got out of the inning with his fifth strikeout when Willy Adames went down swinging on a slider.
Poor base running erased Tommy Edman, the leadoff walk in the home half of the fourth. With Teoscar Hernández at the plate, Edman was picked off and caught stealing second base.
Kershaw went out to start the fifth inning for perhaps his last batter on the mound at Dodger Stadium. Rafael Devers was called out on looking at a Kershaw fastball for strike three. Dave Roberts slowly approached the mound, and with his wife Ellen crying in the stands, Kershaw gave an emotional curtain call as he headed back to the dugout.
Everyone wanted this win for Kershaw. The Dodgers’ offense finally gave him the run support the ace deserved with back-to-back home runs against Ray in the fifth.
Shohei Ohtani did not allow Kershaw’s start to go to waste and crushed a three-run home run for his 52nd of the year. Mookie Betts tacked on a fourth run with a solo homer of his own to chase Ray out of the game and give the Dodgers a three-run lead.
Rojas and Andy Pages hit consecutive doubles with two outs in the sixth against San Francisco reliever Spencer Bivens to add some insurance for the Dodgers.
The Giants got closer when Chapman drove in a run off Justin Wrobleski in the seventh.
Tanner Scott gave up a single in the top of the ninth to Christian Koss and walked Adames to bring up Rafael Devers, the tying run to the plate with one out. Things got dicey when Scott went 3-2 on Devers, but he was able to strike him out for his fourth strikeout of the game. Chapman popped up to end the threat.
The champagne toasts postgame will be that much sweeter.
The Dodgers’ Magic No. to clinch the NL West is now 4.
