Why Chicago will or won’t win in Week 3

It’s Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season, and the Chicago Bears are right where they always appear to be: last place. After a 0-2 start, with both losses within the division, they are finally playing a home game against a non-NFC North foe as they battle the Dallas Cowboys.

Before the start of the regular season, the Cowboys traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, where he is helping them look like one of the best teams in the NFL. He didn’t leave behind a terrible Dallas team, but they are not a juggernaut at this point in time. Still, they have weapons that can help them win on any given Sunday.

The Bears are still in the early stages of the season, which gives hope that they can climb out of this winless mess. There is also reasons for pessimism, as they are one of the worst franchises in pro sports, despite the upgrade in talent over the offseason.

With that in mind, here’s why the Bears will or won’t beat the Cowboys on Sunday:

Why the Bears will win

The Bears have shown growth on offense over the first two weeks. There is a long way to go with quarterback Caleb Williams, but head coach Ben Johnson has them on the rise. The emergence of Rome Odunze as a top-flight receiver is something that can influence this game, as well. If Williams and Odunze can have another big day together, the Bears will have the chance to win the football game.

The Cowboys do not have a great defense anymore. Without Parsons, things are going to be difficult in terms of establishing a pass rush. If you can’t get to the opposing quarterback, you can’t win with consistency. The Bears are coming off playing two 14-win teams from a year ago that relied heavily on their elite defensive lines. That won’t be the case with this version of the Cowboys rolling in. If there was ever a time for Chicago’s new-look offensive line, where three of the five members are new players to the organization, it’s now.

Why the Bears won’t win

Chicago won’t win because their defense is truly bad. No matter how many points their offense scores, it is hard to see them outdueling the likes of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens. With the Bears’ injured secondary, depleted linebacker and defensive line, and the mystery behind Montez Sweat not producing, it is hard to see them gaining any momentum on that side of the ball.

Expect Prescott to have no problem moving the ball down the field against Chicago’s pass defense. If he is successful early and often, the run game will emerge as well, which the Bears have had no answer for yet this season. Sweat is not worth his contract at this point. Unless he earns his paycheck against these Cowboys, the Bears are going to give up a ton of points again.
