The Chicago Bears front office did a great job in reloading their roster for new head coach Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, but there are times that special players can’t be ignored.
As Chicago prepares to face the Las Vegas Raiders, looking to get their second consecutive win, there’s one player in the black and silver who stands above the rest, and plays a position that has been under question in Chicago for quite some time: edge rusher.
Maxx Crosby is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, and for this week’s installment of “Gimme him,” he was the clear and obvious choice for the Raiders player to steal and put on the Bears roster. With all due respect to Montez Sweat and free-agent signing Dayo Odeyingbo, Crosby is truly a rare and elite edge rusher, totaling 34.5 sacks in the past three seasons prior to this year, putting him among the top sack leaders in that span.
Not only does Crosby have the stats to back up his stellar play, he embodies what a franchise cornerstone is, and while he could’ve chased the highest contract or looked to be traded to a winning team, he has been with the Raiders throughout his entire career. Crosby’s commitment to the franchise that selected him in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft, their final season in Oakland, deserves plenty of praise.
Not only his commitment to Vegas, but over the past five seasons, Crosby has had to go up against an incredibly tough challenge when facing superstar quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert in the AFC West. That familiarity of facing top quarterbacks would lead to a smooth transition in the NFC North, where Jordan Love and Jared Goff have had the Bears’ number over the last several seasons.
Adding Crosby to the Bears defense wouldn’t mean that Sweat or Odeyingbo would need to be gone, but rather, Crosby would more than likely elevate the play of his fellow teammates. Crosby would be an instant fan-favorite in Chicago and would finally return the “Monsters of the Midway” mentality that the Bears defense has been missing since the departures of Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Charles Tillman.
