Rams’ Matthew Stafford compares off day to NBA players

Stafford isn’t afraid to admit he didn’t have his best against the Eagles

When he’s on, Matthew Stafford is as deadly accurate as any quarterback in the NFL. Unfortunately, he’s not immune to having, well, off days.

He had one of those against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, a game the Los Angeles Rams lost in heartbreaking fashion, 33-26. He threw a bad interception on the opening drive, missed Davante Adams on a third-and-short out route and also failed to hit a layup to Puka Nacua on another pivotal third-down play.

Stafford doesn’t run from the fact that he didn’t have his best, acknowledging he wasn’t as accurate as usual in his last game. On Wednesday, he compared it to an elite NBA shooter having an off night on the floor.

“I don’t try to think too much about it,” he said. “I just go back to doing what I always do, work the way I always work. Understand that you go to an NBA game, you watch guys shoot the ball, best shooters in the world, the guys that can make it every time. Sometimes they have nights where it doesn’t go down and maybe they have to get to the hole a little bit more and find different ways to score. It happens. I’m not too worried about it.”

Being in his 17th NFL season, this certainly wasn’t the first time Stafford has been a little bit off with his accuracy. He’s had poor performances before, ones much worse than the showing he had on Sunday.

He obviously doesn’t like it when that happens, but it’s not as if he goes back to square one and has to start over. He says there’s “no reset,” and he just keeps doing what he always does.

“I know that those kind of days are going to happen,” he said. “It’s frustrating when it happens, but I was able to get it going and was feeling better. That two-minute drive I was putting the ball right where I wanted to every time for the most part. Just continue to throw, trust the process, trust what I do to get ready week in and week out and go play.”

Against the Eagles, Stafford completed 19 of 33 passes for 196 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, his second pick of the season. He also had an 82.4 passer rating, 23 points lower than his rating in any other game so far this year.

Stafford will look to bounce back on Sunday when the Rams host the 3-0 Colts, a game that looks much more difficult now than it did before the season started.
