Kelvin Sheppard offers a great line about Lions LB Jack Campbell

Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard played linebacker for a long time in the NFL. Sheppard played eight seasons and recorded almost 500 tackles while battling through some injuries, including the ones that cut short his playing career in Detroit back in 2018 after just seven games.

Sheppard was a quality NFL starting linebacker, something he’s humbly proud of. But he also knows who he was and where his ceiling hit as a player. Sheppard knows Jack Campbell has a much higher ceiling, and he’s proud of that, too.

After coaching Campbell and the Lions’ LBs before moving to coordinator this year, Sheppard has a keen sense of what all No. 46 can do. He dropped a great line about how that compares to Sheppard’s own career when asked if he would have like to have played with Campbell.

“How would I have liked to play with Jack? He probably would’ve taken my job,” Sheppard admitted. “So I wouldn’t have been playing with him, I would’ve been watching him. But he’s a great teammate, but I wouldn’t have liked him as a teammate because he would’ve been above me on the depth chart.”

In a more serious tone, Sheppard also had this to say about Campbell,

“It’s amazing, that dude, when I tell you, he is all ball and he embodies everything that this program is built on. I mean the man hours – everybody knows Jack’s history, I don’t have to sit up here and give you a soliloquy about Jack Campbell. But he’s unbelievable and I’m very fortunate to be able to have that player running this defense.”
