On Friday, President Donald Trump visited the first day of the competition for the Ryder Cup, a U.S. vs. Europe golf event.

The competition this year is at Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York, per USA Today.

Trump is the first sitting American president to attend the Ryder Cup.

He arrived in Long Island at 11 a.m. and was scheduled to return to the White House by 5 p.m. The president arrived just before the afternoon session began on Friday, per The Athletic.

“I’m going to go for a little while to represent the United States at the Ryder Cup, which is very exciting,” Trump said from the South Lawn of the White House before flying to New York.

The president was joined on the trip by his granddaughter Kai Trump, who plans to play golf for the University of Miami, per The Athletic.

Before landing, Trump flew over the course on Air Force One. He lamented that team USA “is not doing so well.” He also joked that he was traveling to Bethpage to assist the American golfers, per CBS News.

So far this year Trump attended a number of high-profile sporting events including the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500.

Trump himself is known to golf often, and the Trump Organization owns more than a dozen golf courses around the world, per USA Today.

After arriving at the competition, Trump briefly joined the U.S. duo of Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin on the course.

Trump watched the beginning of the afternoon matches from a box in the first row of a grandstand at Bethpage’s first tee and 18th green. The president’s seat was surrounded by protective glass, and there was heavy security throughout the course.

Because of his presence, the site had extra fencing, heavy Secret Service presence and people entering the site were subject to TSA-style screening points, per The Athletic.

After arriving at the event, the U.S. president shook hands with other spectators. He also fist pumped to a brief “Donald Trump” chant. A group of Europeans started a short “Ole” chant which was booed down by Americans.

Trump greeted DeChambeau and Griffin at the tunnel leading to the tee box and then walked with them onto the course.

As the pair teed off, he stood a few feet away from them before returning to his seat.

Earlier this week, another member of the American Team, Scottie Scheffler said that the president’s presence would give the team a boost.

“It’s been a tough few weeks for our country with some of the stuff that’s been going on, and to have our president here and for us to represent the United States of America, albeit being in a golf tournament, is extremely important for us,” Scheffler said, per CBS News.

The Ryder Cup features two rounds of team matches on Friday and Saturday, and then on Sunday there will be one-on-one matches to close out the competition.
