In Corsica, a golden flower called helichrysum has been cultivated for generations. Though helichrysum—also known as immortelle—is well-known on the island for its unique properties, it is now also attracting the attention of some the most respected beauty laboratories.

Today, in the Corsica scrubland (or “maquis”) it is well-known for its sweet, year-round, curry fragrance and tiny, vibrant flowers. Its scent can be smelled in the breeze, evoking the mystical link between the island and the flower. Shepherds and elders use the flower to protect their homes from evil spirits and to promote longevity, explaining the nickname immortelle or “immortal.” It is also known by the names everlasting, strawflower, and curry plant.

For Corsicans, helichrysum is a symbol of strength and timeless beauty. But the flower is not just symbolic, it also has purported wellness benefits—especially in essential oil form—thanks to various bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids.

Though research is limited, some small studies suggest that helichrysum essential oil can help promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation.
