MLB playoff picture with clinching scenarios, tiebreakers on Sunday

The 2025 MLB playoffs are happening this week (!) and so it’s time to see what postseason spots are still open, which teams have a shot at moving up or down and more.

As of right now, all but one playoff team is left to be decided. There’s jockeying for position, with one divisional spot in the American League up for grabs, one AL top seed to be decided and one National League Wild Card spot that has come down to the final day of the season.

Let’s talk about the teams who have something to play for as we get set for some baseball on Sunday.

American League playoff teams

Toronto Blue Jays (93-68): They’re in, but they’re trying to grab the No. 1 seed in the AL over the Yankees. A win or a loss by the Yankees on Sunday and they’re the top seed.

New York Yankees (93-68): They’re in but trying to grab the No. 1 seed. A win and a loss by the Blue Jays and they’re the top seed.

Seattle Mariners (90-71): They’re currently the No. 3 seed. They’ll get a bye in the first round.

Boston Red Sox (88-73): They’re in as the second Wild Card team, which means they’ll be a road team in the first round.

Cleveland Guardians (87-74): They’re in, but if they win or the Tigers lose on Sunday, they get the AL Central crown.

Detroit Tigers (87-74): A win and a loss by the Guardians and they’re the AL Central champs.

National League playoff teams

Milwaukee Brewers (96-65): They’re the No. 1 seed in the NL. Nothing to play for on Sunday (that’s bad news for the Mets since the Brew Crew plays the Reds, see below).

Philadelphia Phillies (95-66): They’re the No. 2 seed.

Los Angeles Dodgers (92-69): They’re the NL West winner and the No. 3 seed.

Chicago Cubs (91-70): They’re in and will play the Padres in the first round. A win Saturday agave them home-field advantage against San Diego.

San Diego Padres (89-72): See above. They’re in and will play the Cubs.

Cincinnati Reds (83-78): They own the tiebreaker over the Mets, so a win on Sunday and they’re the final Wild Card.

New York Mets (83-78): A win and a Reds loss and they’re the final Wild Card.
