For each of the Philadelphia Eagles’ first three games, they’ve been the hunted.
The Dallas Cowboys wanted to steal the spotlight on Super Bowl banner night.
The Kansas City Chiefs wanted revenge for Super Bowl LIX.
The Los Angeles Rams wanted revenge for their Divisional Round loss in Philly last season.
Now it’s the Eagles who are doing the hunting. They’re out to prove that they can beat this Tampa Bay Buccaneers team once again after mostly struggling to do so during the Nick Sirianni/Jalen Hurts era.
The Eagles should have a better chance this year than they did last season. They have A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Lane Johnson this time around. The Bucs, meanwhile, are missing several starters.
Also working in the Eagles’ favor: they simply don’t lose. And so it’s hard to pick against them, even if Todd Bowles might have their number.
Maybe the Florida heat is an issue. Maybe the Eagles’ offense didn’t truly turn a corner in last week’s game. Maybe Baker Mayfield totally takes advantage of Kelee Ringo, who struggled in the offseason and is only starting because both Adoree’ Jackson and Jakorian Bennett got hurt. Maybe Nolan Smith going on injured reserve significantly hurts the pass rush. Maybe the Eagles’ run defense continues to be a problem.
The Bucs are absolutely capable of beating this team. But while they’re good, they’re not without their own flaws. And that much is reflected by how they’ve won by the skin of their teeth each week to get to 3-0. There’s a reason the Eagles are 3.5-point road favorites in this matchup. The Birds are the better team.
Until the Eagles prove they no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt, you have to give it to them.
Score prediction: 24 to 21, Eagles win.
Bold prediction: DeVonta Smith throws a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown.
