As we enter the final quarter of the year, Nike’s Air Max 95 30th anniversary celebration continues in a big way with the return of an original style first seen in 1995. 

Officially set to release in October is the Nike Air Max 95 OG Big Bubble in Solar Red. More specifically, the look features a Black/Solar Red/Medium Ash color combination, but it’s the vivid red shade that defines the upcoming launch. The original ’95 style uses the model’s classic gray gradient fade upper, shifting from a black midsole through a spectrum of grays before finishing with white on the tongue. Like the Neon colorway and other fan-favorite gradient pairs, the Solar Red version merely swaps out the highlighter-like accent colors resulting in a fresh yet familiar look for the storied sneaker.

The Air Max 95 was designed by Sergio Lozano and was originally released in ’95 as a performance running shoe. As the first Nike model to feature visible forefoot Air cushioning and the brand’s first running sneaker with a black midsole, it was a game changer aesthetically and quickly caught on with fashion-savvy consumers. Within years of its debut, the Air Max 95 had become a quintessential piece of street style and its performance origins were all but forgotten in favor of new colorways, concepts and eventually, collaborations.

“Yeah, it was technically a running shoe, but nobody I knew was lacing those up to go jog,” James Whitner, founder of The Whitaker Group, told Footwear News in May. “It was about the look, the presence. The Air Max 95 helped shape what we now think of as Air Max culture, especially in the Black community. From the moment it dropped, it had that energy. It was bold, expensive, hard to get. So if you had a pair, it said something.”

Thus far, each of this year’s OG-styled gray gradient Air Max 95 releases have been quick to sell out. Along with the aforementioned Neon, the sneaker has been reissued in Bright Mandarin, Blue Spark and Pink Foam colorways.

The Nike Air Max 95 OG Big Bubble Solar Red will be released Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. ET from Nike’s Snkrs app and the pair can also be found at select Nike Sportswear retailers. Pricing is set at $190 and the style code for the Solar Red look is IM7410-001.
