Texas A&M LB Scooby Williams is reportedly ‘day-to-day’ this week

Texas A&M’s 16-10 win over the Auburn Tigers was not the game any of us expected after watching the Aggies’ pass their way to a 41-40 road victory over Notre Dame, which still stands as one of the best victories of the season thus far. Instead, Texas A&M’s defense completely shut down Auburn’s offense for just 177 yards, including 52 rushing yards.

While OC Collin Klein’s offense did produce 414 yards, including 207 yards on the ground, 13 penalties prevented the Aggies from scoring more than 16 points, but thanks to the defense, none of this mattered after Texas A&M allowed Auburn to gain just one yard in the fourth quarter.

Before the game, it was reported that senior linebacker Scooby Williams, who had injured his ankle against Notre Dame, would miss the matchup but was progressing towards returning to the field much sooner than later. On Monday, coach Mike Elko reported that the senior is “day-to-day” heading into the week.

In his place, junior linebacker Daymion Sanford was lights out against the Tigers, recording two tackles and a sack, and earned a prolific 85.6 pass rush grade after the win. At the same time, Sanford is more of a downhill thumper who is on his way to becoming an elite run defender, similar to star linebacker Taurean York.

However, Williams’s size, instincts, and coverage skillset put Texas A&M’s ascending defense over the top. This Saturday, Texas A&M’s blackout night game vs. Mississippi State is a must-win for the Aggies to keep pace in the SEC, and if Williams can play, the Aggies will be in great shape.
