AI Mode, Google‘s advanced, AI-powered search experience that provides detailed, conversational and cited answers to complex questions, has added a new update to simplify product exploration and shopping.
Now users can describe what they’re looking for as if they’re talking to a friend, and AI Mode will turn one’s vague idea into a clear vision with rich visuals to match the vibe you’re seeking. When you want to shop, you can simply describe what you’re looking for without having to sort through filters, and AI Mode will show you visual shopping results. This update is also allowing people to ask longer questions of Google. The user can also start their search by uploading an image or snapping a photo, and see a rich visual response with links to jump out and explore more content from across the web.
Lilian Rincon, vice president of product for Google Shopping, said in a press roundtable Monday, “We’re really working here on making AI Mode much more visual and much better for both inspiration and also for inspirational shopping.” You can describe what you’re looking for such as “barrel jeans that aren’t too baggy” and AI Mode will intelligently provide a relevant set of shoppable options. You can then refine your search further, and ask for more ankle length, for example. You would then visit the retailer’s site and purchase. There is no revenue share involved.
With the update, they are giving more product information, showing prices and stock availability, and making the images bigger and more inspiring, said Rincon. You are also able to have a more natural language conversation in the same way that you would talk to a friend and can go back and forth in the same conversation to refine the search, she said.
Rincon noted that Google has a Shopping Graph of more than 50 billion product listings. The Shopping Graph helps the user see products from stores around the world, from major retailers to local shops, with details such as reviews, latest deals, colors and availability. Every hour more than 2 billion of those product listings are refreshed on Google.
This new visual search experience takes Google search with Lens and Image search and combines it with Gemini 2.5’s advanced multimodal and language capabilities. Building on their query fan-out approach, the new “visual search fan-out” technique allows Google to have a deeper understanding of what’s in an image. This means AI Mode can perform a more comprehensive analysis of an image, recognizing subtle details and secondary objects in addition to the primary subjects, and then runs multiple queries in the background. This helps it understand the full visual context and the nuance of the natural language question to deliver highly relevant visual results.
Google said that if you want to go even deeper with inspirational images, on mobile, one can search within a specific image, asking conversational follow-up questions about what you’re seeing.
