Arizona had tryouts for two kickers, three punters, three long snappers and a linebacker.
The Arizona Cardinals, like the rest of the NFL, periodically bring in players for tryouts. That often happens on Tuesdays, when players are usually off. Many times, they bring in players at particular positions where they have injuries and need to add players to the practice squad.
Other times, it is some simply some “in case of emergency” tryouts.
On Friday, it appears the Cardinals did that. According to the NFL transaction report, they hosted nine tryouts, almost all specialists — punters, kickers and long snappers.
None of the Cardinals’ specialists were on the injury report this past week, so it would appear to be scouting to know who to sign if something were to happen.
Here are the Cardinals’ Friday tryouts:
Kicker tryouts
- Jonathan Kim
- Matthew Wright
Kim is an undrafted rookie who signed with the Bears but was cut in August.
Wright has been in the league since 2020 and has kicked for seven different teams.
Punter tryouts
- Jack Browning
- James Burnip
- Ryan Stonehouse
Browning punted in five games last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Burnip is an undrafted rookie out of Alabama who spent part of the offseason with the New Orleans Saints.
Stonehouse was the Tennessee Titans’ punter for three seasons before this year.
Long snapper tryouts
- Luke Elkin
- Brent Matiscik
- Zach Triner
Elkin is an undrafted rookie out of Iowa who signed with the Bears but didn’t make the team.
Matiscik went undrafted this year out of TCU and signed originally with the Cleveland Browns.
Triner was Tampa Bay’s long snapper from 2019-2024. He also played three last season for the Miami Dolphins.
Linebacker tryout
Asante is an undrafted rookie who played collegiately for North Carolina and Auburn.
