Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou to hold talks with club hierarchy over winless start | Football News

Ange Postecoglou says he expects to hold talks with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis about his seven-game winless start over the international break.

Pressure was already building on Postecoglou before Sunday’s defeat at Newcastle which left them just above the relegation zone after taking a solitary point from the four Premier League matches he has been in charge of.

Sky Sports News understands Marinakis will not hesitate in removing the head coach if performances and results do not quickly improve.

Postecoglou, appointed less than a month ago, is already facing an uncertain future – but the Forest boss is adamant he has what it takes to turn things around at the City Ground.

Ange Postecoglou says he has full belief he can turn Nottingham Forest around

“I expect to have a discussion with the owner and everyone else at the football club about what we’ve embarked on here, where we’re at and what we need to do for sure,” the Forest boss said after the game.

“If people want to make an assessment of me after three and a half weeks, which we’ve had six or seven games in a row, then there’s nothing I can do about that.”

Pressed further on his future, Postecoglou said: “It’s a fun game, isn’t it? It’s fun every week. It’s me this week and who knows, maybe you’re all right and I’m gone. Next week it’ll be somebody else and there’s a lot of fun around it.

“I don’t care. I love the position I’m in right now where I have to fight for everything. It’s what I’ve done my whole career.

“I started in Australia when I was 32 years old in semi-professional football. And I’m here in the Premier League at the age of 60. Do you reckon I lack self-belief or don’t like a fight? I didn’t get here because of my connections.

Ange Postecoglou admits he’s expecting a conversation with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis following a tough run of results

“In fact, I’ve picked fights. I have, even in the schoolyard. I’ve picked fights with people who I knew would beat me up. That’s the kind of person I am.

“I totally understand that it’s part of the fanfare around the Premier League that there needs to be a manager who’s always under the spotlight. I get that. It’s my turn at the moment.

“But I think, like most other managers, I think we actually enjoy this bit.”

Carra: It will be a long international break for Ange

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher:

“It’s going to be a long two weeks for Ange Postecoglou to get those players back, a few of them may go away on international duty.

“So it’s been a really tough start for him. Tough season last season, he went out with a bang with what happened at Tottenham, with a trophy. Fantastic way to go out for him.

“But for the majority of last season, he was in this position, losing games of football. Uncomfortable isn’t it for him right now until he gets that first win on the board, and he’s going to have to wait another couple of weeks at the very least.”

Analysis: Not even Nunoball could bring Ange first win

Sky Sports’ Zinny Boswell:

“If people outside don’t think I’m the right person – or even internally – it makes no difference for me.” Ange Postecoglou has only been at Nottingham Forest for 27 days yet already sounds like he did in the final weeks of his time at Tottenham.

His task of replacing Nuno Espirito Santo mid-season and bringing Angeball to the City Ground was always going to be challenging, but surely no one expected it to reach this point quite so quickly. Postecoglou was already on thin ice before losing at Newcastle.

A Forest defeat and poor performance it was thought could be crucial in seeing the current levels of patience wane within the boardroom. There was fight and spirit on show, but Postecoglou dispensed of Angeball and reverted to his predecessor’s ways.

You wonder how that will go down with the decision-maker at Forest. Everyone now waits on the outcome of Postecoglou’s talks with the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis over the international break.

The results do not make for good reading. Postecoglou has a solitary point at Forest after four games in the Premier League. His predecessor Nuno is responsible for 80 per cent of their total, despite taking charge of one less game.

Postecoglou has endured bad results in the Premier League for more than a year, those struggles dating back to his time at Tottenham. He has just two points from a possible 33 in an 11-game winless run in the competition.
