Mamaroneck leads the field hockey rankings; see top 10

While it may seem like high school field hockey just launched, a feeling enhanced by a largely warm early fall, many teams are already entering the home stretch of the regular season.

Last week provided few surprises, especially among the area’s top teams. That’s reflected in the latest Journal News/lohud rankings, which are below.

Note: Records reflect games played through Oct. 5.

1. Mamaroneck (9-2) The Tigers may fall a bit in the MAX Field Hockey Northeast rankings after losing by a goal to Greenwich, Connecticut, which was ranked a few notches below it. But that game has no impact on the Tigers’ standing here. They’ve yet to lose a game to a Section 1 foe. Previously: 1

2. Horace Greeley (9-0-1) — The Quakers shut out Pearl River last week to give head coach Sukhi Sandhu his 200th career varsity win at Greeley and then won again for No. 201. This week, Greeley has three games. The most interesting will be Wednesday when it hosts Rye. Expect a close, low-scoring game. Previously: 2

3. Rye (9-1) — In their last three games, the Garnets beat Lakeland by a goal, beat Yorktown by two goals and beat John Jay-Cross River by a goal in overtime on a Liv Prata score (her second goal of the game) off a perfect Beau Whaling backdoor feed. The three teams are Rye’s Section 1 Class B rivals and, like Rye, elite. The only top Class B team missing from the list is Horace Greeley. Rye will play the Quakers Wednesday in what should be a close, must-see game. Previously: 3

4. Lakeland (8-2-2) The Hornets won the two games they played last week. This week, they’ll face an improving John Jay-Cross River squad that came close to upsetting Rye, before taking on Class A powehouser Mamaroneck. Win or lose, having played very good teams back-to-back should benefit the young Hornets during playoffs later this month. Previously: 4

5. Yorktown (7-2) The Huskers and No. 6 John Jay-Cross River are in a virtual dead heat. Both suffered close losses to Rye and both have a good shot of making the Class B final four — no small deed since Class B is the strongest class in Section 1 and has five very, very good teams. A good game to watch will be next week’s battle between those two teams. First, the Huskers have two games this week, the second being Friday against Mamaroneck. It would be a triple-exclamation-point surprise if Yorktown pulled off an upset. But even a relatively close game (Rye fell to Mamaroneck 4-0) would provide further evidence Yorktown is indeed among the area’s very best teams. Previously: 5

6. John Jay-Cross River (8-2) — The Wolves came out on the short end of a 3-2 score in overtime against Rye, but that game showed how vastly improved this squad is since early in the season. The improvement impressively came as the Wolves feasted, for the most part, on weaker teams. John Jay-Cross River has done the unlikely because It’s hard to get better when you’re never challenged (until the Rye game, every Wolves game was a shutout — their early loss to Greeley included). Rye was just the beginning. The Wolves’ schedule isn’t easy this week nor next. It includes Lakeland, No. 1 Mamaroneck and Yorktown. Strong showings in one or more of these games could boost the Wolves into the Top 5. Previously: 6

7. White Plains (9-1) —The Tigers haven’t played as many top teams as most ranked squads. In fact, Mamaroneck, which hopes to claim a state Class A three-peat. is the only ranked team White Plains has faced. That was an early-season 6-0 White Plains loss. Looking ahead, it’s possible White Plains will finish the regular season with only that one loss, which would be a very positive thing for field hockey at the school. But the Tigers will have to be careful this Friday when ithey face Mahopac, a solid defensive team that has had a tougher schedule and fell only 2-1 to Yorktown. Previously: 7

8. Bronxville (7-2) The Broncos don’t always score a lot, but they also don’t yield many goals. The Class C school that lost only 4-0 to Lakeland and 2-1 to Yorktown, both Class B schools, edged Pleasantville 1-0 and Pelham 2-0 last week. Previously: 8

9. Rye Country Day (7-1-1) — The Wildcats built off a loss the previous week to a very strong Greenwich, Connecticut squad with two, lopsided shutout wins last week. That’s what good teams do: Play the best (sometimes taking your lumps) and get better. Previously: 9

10. Mahopac (6-4) — In four of their six wins, the Wolf Pac has allowed no goals. In the other two, they allowed one. And two of their four losses have been close — 2-1 to Yorktown and 1-0 to Ketcham. That defense will be tested next week by Rye, which will be a signficant favorite. But what happens against No. 7 White Plains this week is anyone’s guess. Previously: 10

On the bubble: Arlington (6-4), Clarkstown (7-2), John Jay-East Fishkill (8-1-1), Pleasantville (7-4), Rye Neck (6-2)
