James makes Decision 2.0 in Hennessy ad

LeBron James isn’t going anywhere, after all. At least not quite yet.

The announcement the Los Angeles Lakers star had teased Monday, Oct. 6 fueled speculation that it could address his playing future and possible retirement plans. It turned out to be an ad.

James and Hennessy launched a limited edition bottle of cognac bearing his name on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The collab came through an ad campaign dubbed “The Second Decision,” alluding to his infamous July 2010 televised special in which he announced that he would be joining the Miami Heat in free agency. James also wrote Monday in the teaser that this would be “the decision of all decisions.”

The partnership between James and Hennessy began in 2024, and the latest campaign focuses on his “crowing” gesture that he often uses to celebrate big plays.

On the bottle, there is an image of James placing an imaginary crown on his head.

“It’s an honor to continue this partnership with Hennessy,” James said Tuesday in a news release issued by Hennessy. “Our first collection was about a shared pursuit of excellence and boundary pushing, and this new limited edition is another chapter in that story. The design features my crowning gesture, which is special for me and stands for celebration and connection. That’s what this bottle is made for.”

James, who will turn 41 in December, is set to enter his record 23rd season in the NBA.

During the Lakers media day availability Monday, Sept. 29, James addressed his future, though he evaded providing an exact timeline.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season,” James said. “However the journey lays out this year, I’m super-invested, because I don’t know when the end is. I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

Despite his age, James continues to be one of the premier players in the NBA. In 70 appearances last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

He is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 42,184 career points and holds numerous other NBA records.
