The Los Angeles Chargers already made one trade this week, acquiring former first-round pick Odafe Oweh from the Baltimore Ravens to add more to the team's pass rush. After a 3-0 start that now sees the team at 3-2, more moves could be coming before that great start becomes a big waste.
The Chargers have suffered some huge injuries this season, including to their top two running backs. With Najee Harris out for the season and Omarion Hampton out at least the next four games with an ankle injury, it's not hard to guess that the team could be looking at a struggling team to see if they could obtain one of their running backs.
How about the New Orleans Saints?
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report sees that as a possibility. He predicts that the Saints could move star running back Alvin Kamara, naming the Chargers and Chiefs as the top potential suitors. He predicts that Kamara could be had for a future fourth-round pick.
"The Saints picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, besting the Giants.
While keeping standout running back Alvin Kamara would help keep the Saints competitive and allow them to continue evaluating quarterback Spencer Rattler, trading the 25-year-old would also make sense.
Moving Kamara, who has recorded 17 receptions for 360 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, would likely bring a quality return. That's relevant because the Saints may dive back into the quarterback market next year if Rattler or rookie Tyler Shough can't solidify the position.
There's a chance Kamara would be a cap casualty next offseason anyway. New Orleans is projected to be $18.8 million over the salary cap, and it could save $8.5 million by releasing the 30-year-old with a post-June 1 designation in the spring.
With Kendre Miller taking over a bigger role in the offense—he received more carries than Kamara in Week 5—the Saints have a chance to make a move", wrote Knox.
Kamara has been connected to trade rumors for quite some time, but the Saints have never expressed much interest in moving him. However, if the right deal comes, they would likely be all ears due to the reasons Knox mentions.
It would be a terrific move for the Chargers as the team has only four running backs (including the practice squad) on the current roster. They are Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal, Amar Johnson and Nyheim Hines-Miller. Kamara would be a massive upgrade over all of them as one of the best receiving running backs the league has ever seen.
It remains to be seen what, if any, deal the Chargers make at running back. It would be a risky move to stick with what they have, but Jim Harbaugh may feel that is the best route to take, at least until Hampton can return to the field.
