The Webster Sells Majority Stake to U.K.’s Frasers Group

The Webster has a new majority owner.

The luxury multibrand retailer has sold a majority stake to the British retail conglomerate Frasers Group, effective immediately.

Financial details were not disclosed but under the terms of the deal, founder and chief executive officer Laure Hériard Dubreuil will retain “a significant” share of the company and remain with the business to manage it through its next phase.

The Webster was founded by Hériard Dubreuil with two business partners — Frederic Dechnik, formerly of Gucci, and Milan Vukmirovic, founder of Colette — in 2008 in Miami. Its 20,000-square-foot flagship location opened the next year at 1220 Collins Avenue in South Beach in the site of the former Webster Hotel, an Art Deco building built in 1939 by architect Henry Hohauser. Her original partners have not been involved in the business for many years.

Hériard Dubreuil kept the name and transformed the space into a multibrand store designed to resemble a residence where brands were mixed to feel like a personal wardrobe, arranged by mood.

Since its founding, The Webster has expanded to 13 locations across North America, including the latest additions in Atlanta, Austin and Las Vegas. There’s also a 12,000-square-foot store in New York’s SoHo neighborhood that opened in 2017.

The Webster carries more than 100 luxury brands including Alaïa, Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Dior, Ferragamo, Gucci, Loewe, Miu Miu, Pucci, Rick Owens, Saint Laurent and The Row across women’s, men’s, jewelry, home and beauty.

Although now majority owned by Frasers Group, The Webster will continue to operate as a stand-alone business within Frasers Group’s Flannels luxury division, according to the retailer. But the new ownership will allow the business to continue to grow while also strengthening its digital and operational platforms.

“I am so excited to announce the start of a new chapter for The Webster,” Hériard Dubreuil said. “In almost two decades, The Webster has grown far beyond my wildest dreams from the locations we have opened to the amazing brand partnerships we have been able to create during my tenure. When it came to looking toward the future, it was so important to me to find a like-minded partner who believed in what The Webster stood for. Our creativity, curation and customer experience, are what have allowed us to remain a fixture within a world of primarily digital retail. Since our first conversation, I knew that Michael and the Frasers Group team were completely aligned with our approach and would be the best partner to help take the business to the next level, bringing a renewed energy and digital innovation.”

Michael Murray, CEO of Frasers Group, added: “I’ve long admired what Laure has built with The Webster — a truly unique concept with flawless execution and exceptional brand partnerships, including Chanel, Gucci and Celine. This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for both The Webster and Frasers Group’s luxury division, Flannels. With our financial strength, operational expertise, and proven digital capabilities, it’s a perfect partnership to support The Webster to fulfill its potential. Equally, I look forward to learning from Laure and further elevating our own luxury portfolio. Together, we’re unlocking new opportunities for both The Webster and Flannels: a powerful alignment of ambition, expertise, and vision for the future of global luxury retail.”

Flannels operates more than 80 stores across the U.K. and Ireland. It was founded in the north of England in 1976 and was acquired by Frasers Group in 2017.

Hériard Dubreuil grew up in Paris and worked as a top merchandiser for Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent before founding The Webster.
