Gakpo still hopeful Alexander-Arnold stays at Liverpool

Cody Gakpo has said he is hopeful that teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold’s deal is due to expire at the end of the season with the right-back having failed to agree new terms. Real Madrid are heavily interested in signing the 26-year-old, who has been free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign teams since January.

Alexander-Arnold was one of three high-profile players out of contract at Anfield, though Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have since signed new deals with the club. Though the expectation is that Alexander-Arnold will leave for Real Madrid this summer, teammate Gakpo does not appear to have given up hope.

Speaking to Sky Sports as Liverpool celebrated winning the Premier League on Sunday, the Dutch winger said he hopes Alexander-Arnold stays so that the title winners can ‘keep building’.

“Now with Mo [Salah] and Virgil [Van Dijk] staying, and hopefully Trent as well, we can keep building,” Gakpo said.

Alexander-Arnold has remained coy on his future and said last week that he would not comment when asked for an update, following his winning goal at Leicester.

“I said all season I’m not going to speak on my situation or comment on details but days like today are special,” the defender said.

“Scoring goals, winning games, being close to winning titles. Special moments that will live with me forever.”

Liverpool’s title success this season is the second Alexander-Arnold has won at Anfield. He has made 351 appearances and won seven major trophies with the Reds since progressing through the academy ranks.
