Potential MSU coaching candidate comments on future, possible job opportunities elsewhere

One of the potential candidates to replace Jonathan Smith as the Spartans’ head coach has commented on his name being linked to many big-time jobs.

The future for Smith at Michigan State has quickly come into question after last week’s embarrassing blowout loss to UCLA. That loss extending the Spartans’ losing streak to three games has many calling (and expecting) for a coaching change for Michigan State.

With the chatter picking up on a potential dismissal of Smith, predictions and thoughts on who could replace him have started to occurred, with one current group of five head coach getting a lot of interest from the Spartans’ fanbase. That is USF head coach Alex Golesh. However, earlier this week Golesh was asked about his name popping up on a number of coaching candidates lists and he did his best effort to shut that down.

“I’ve never in my career, outside of here, chased a job. Ever. And I don’t intend to,” Golesh said during a lengthy response to the topic.

You can hear his full four-plus minute response in the video below — courtesy of 10 Tampa Bay Sports Director Evan Closky:

These types of comments are hard to put much weight into because what is Golesh supposed to say to that question when he’s currently leading a team that’s in the thick of the College Football Playoff race? Obviously, he’s going to say he’s not interested and is focused on the task at hand at USF.

But, I will say one thing: his response on why he isn’t interested in another job did seem truly genuine and not some boiler plate response that we typically get in these situations. So, maybe he truly isn’t interested in leaving for a place like Michigan State or Auburn or Florida or whoever.

Michigan State’s job isn’t officially open so we are a long ways away from anything happening with Golesh or any other potential candidate. But this is at least something to monitor and keep an eye on should the Spartans part ways with Smith, because Golesh certainly would be one of the top candidates for Michigan State if that occurs.
