Brian Daboll wanted to select Jaxson Dart third overall in NFL draft

The New York Giants are excited about their two first-round picks from the 2025 NFL draft, linebacker Abdul Carter and quarterback Jaxson Dart. Both players are exhibiting traits of greatness early on in their careers so far.

Carter was supposed to be this good. He was compared to some of the great college linebackers in recent years, most recently another Penn State Nittany Lion, Micah Parsons.

Dart was a boom-or-bust prospect, like many quarterbacks these days. It takes years for many of them to develop. Dart seems to be ahead of the curve.

In this year’s draft, the Giants selected Carter with their own selection at No. 3 and then traded back into the first round to grab Dart at No. 25.

In a recent podcast interview with former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, a Bill Parcells acolyte who was an assistant for the Giants and New England Patriots in his career, veteran NFL reporter Gary Myers revealed that Giants head coach Brian Daboll wanted Dart at No. 3 instead of Carter.

Weis, whose son, Charlie Jr., was Dart’s quarterback coach in college at Ole Miss, offered some insight on how much Daboll wanted Dart in this draft.

The fact that the Giants ended up getting both players in this draft, thanks to Schoen fending off Daboll’s wishes, is a major coup for a franchise that has fallen on hard times over the past decade.

Since winning Super XLVI in February of 2012, the Giants have lost 10 or more games in nine of the following 11 seasons, a stretch of losing that has become the worst in franchise history. Even worse than the “Wilderness” period (1964-80), when they had just two winning seasons in 17 years.

Dart and Carter are the first steps in reversing that bad fortune. It’s taken several trips to rock bottom to figure things out, but it looks like the Giants just might be on their way back up.
