After losing to USC football in blowout fashion, Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is taking some heat for his performance thus far as the head coach of Michigan.
“Sherrone Moore talked a fair deal of junk before his Michigan football team’s matchup with the USC football team, and now Moore has to face the music,” Ethan Inman of Trojans Wire wrote in a previous article. “Plenty of fans are fed up with his blue collar act in press conferences this week, and some are even calling for his firing!”
“Of course, coming off a national championship season in 2023, the 2024 season was certainly disappointing. And with one more loss, the Wolverines will also likely miss out on the College Football Playoff in 2025. But, even at a proud program like Michigan, is that grounds for them to move on from Moore and hire a new coach?”
If Michigan makes the bold move of firing Moore in the near future, that leaves college football fans with a key question: who would they pick to replace him?
Our writers at Trojans Wire and UCLA Wire weighed in.
Matt Zemek, Trojans Wire
Matt Campbell to Michigan has been floated for a number of years. That wouldn’t be my first choice, but it would be a clear upgrade from Sherrone Moore. Jeff Brohm of Louisville and Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss are solid choices.

Okay hear me out: Michigan head coach Urban Mey . . . just kidding. I think that Moore is still at least a year away from truly being on the hot seat, though, and the potential coaching candidates are going to change a lot during that time.

If they move on from Moore, they will be looking for a a proven coach. Why not see if Nick Saban wants to join Bill Belichick as the oldest coach in college football? Sherrone Moore just might be the best option possible for Michigan, and retaining him might be the move that makes the most sense. Is anybody even running to get this job?

I would look at Curt Cignetti’s staff at Indiana. Current Hoosiers defensive coordinator Bryant Haines would bring the kind of no-nonsense smashmouth football to Ann Arbor that the Wolverines fans crave. Defensive coordinators at powerhouse programs have gone on to plenty of success in head coaching positions recently. But he could depart for a Head Coaching gig elsewhere if Michigan waits too long to scoop him up.
Ryan Lorenz, UCLA Wire
Iowa State’s Matt Campbell has been mentioned before, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end with the Wolverines. He’s had a lot of success with the Cyclones, so it would definitely be interesting to see him in a better program.
Dylan McNeill, UCLA Wire
I’d be interested to see what Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell could do with Michigan. Over Campbell’s 15 seasons as a head coach with Iowa State and Toledo, he’s posted a 104-68 record. If Michigan is looking to make a change, Campbell could help elevate the program that’s still just two seasons removed from a national title.
