The exaggerated base raises the foot on a thick block, amplifying the traditional Mary Jane shape into a heightened, theatrical construction. Gaga styled the platforms with black knee socks and a sharply tailored Balenciaga blazer layered over Lioness’s “Bloom” long-sleeve top. She finished the look with silver Bottega Veneta “Sardine” oval frames, her signature Lorraine Schwartz diamond studs, a Carat London “Eternal Rounds” tennis necklace and a black Hermès Mini Kelly bag.

Mary Janes have crept back into steady rotation this season. Natalie Portman wore a block-heeled pair in Paris for the “Arco” premiere, while Julia Roberts stepped out in Manolo Blahnik’s Campariba style in New York. The shape has also been appearing on runways in more exaggerated forms — including chunky hybrids and platform styles that push past their school-girl origins.

For Gaga, the Milan appearance follows another extreme footwear moment. Last week, she arrived in Italy wearing Christian Louboutin convex platforms engineered in collaboration with Matières Fécales.
