Blackpink is on tour which means we finally see our favorite pop star, Lisa, back on stage. First up this summer was the North American and European legs of the tour, and after a short break —just long enough for the members to attend fashion month—the iconic quartet is in Asia performing in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Hong Kong. Lisa is known for her killer on-stage persona and looks, but for tour, her stylists Brett Alan Nelson and Nan Nist went the extra mile, pulling not just designer but also custom one-of-a-kind pieces. Below, Vogue sits down with Nelson and Nist for an exclusive interview on what it’s like to style the global superstar.
Vogue: Walk us through Lisa’s looks. I know she wore a different designer in each of the American and European cities.
Brett Alan Nelson: I did Coachella with Lisa and a handful of projects with her after. Her team asked me to do the European and US legs of the tour, which I was super excited about. She obviously has great brand relationships, so I kind of reached out to everybody. I wanted to keep my options open for different ideas and sketches, and I wanted to do something that felt very different for her. The goal was for everything to feel rockstar, and I wanted every brand to have a rockstar moment.
In LA, I wanted her to be in an all-over Louis Vuitton monogram look. For Chicago we did a crystal look from Giuseppe di Morabito that she was actually supposed to wear at Coachella. And I love IB Kamara and the whole Off-White team; they did some custom pieces that felt very different than what they normally do and what Lisa normally wears, but if you look closely at the details on the jacket you see the Off-White logo and all these little moments that feel quite cool. Lisa is a huge Ferrari fan and she really wanted me to ask them to do something. The idea was to turn her into a little red hot Ferrari, and they made a custom belt in shiny vinyl that had the logo on it.
