Chris Cooley is a fan of Commander’ Josh Conerly Jr. pick

“I really like Josh Conerly, I think he’s big time.”

That was how Chris Cooley began his review of his film evaluation of the Oregon left tackle whom the Commanders selected in the first round (29th overall) last week.

A guest on the “Kevin Sheehan Show” podcast, Cooley continued with his evaluation. “I’m sure they have a plan. I understand you take whatever you think is best available, but you don’t take a left tackle if you just acquired a left tackle. So, I’m assuming he is (now) a right tackle for them.”

“The kid is huge. He is unbelievably athletic. It shows when you watch him on film. You would assume someone who is an athlete like that should be able to flip sides. He’s an incredible athlete.”

Cooley pointed to Conerly’s footwork, saying that when Oregon determined to run behind Conerly, he did a really good job of overtaking the defensive end who is out wider on his outside shoulder. He apparently stretches the ends out wider, allowing the running back to cut up in the area vacated.

“He doesn’t take false steps; he doesn’t take missteps. He’s technically sound in his footwork. I was really impressed with that.”

When Conerly is on the backside, Cooley said he does a very good job of getting into the inside defensive tackle to his right. “So he could block open zone on the right side, in theory, right? “

How about Conerly’s pass blocking? Cooley thinks he doesn’t slip any in pass blocking either.

“He is able to open up and run (move) with those guys (edge rushers). He can mirror a pass rusher up to seven to nine yards, creating that deeper pocket, giving the quarterback the opportunity to step up into the pocket…That’s a first-round guy that can do that stuff.”

So, in his initial film review of Josh Conerly, the former Washington Redskins tight end believes Conerly is the real deal and first-round material that the Commanders’ GM Adam Peters was able to get way down at 29.
