Alex Cora gives ‘refreshing’ Red Sox player ‘A+’ for first month

Kristian Campbell hasn’t taken long to acclimate to big league pitching.

In his first month with the Red Sox, the 22-year-old second baseman has hit .313 with a .935 OPS. Campbell has 4 home runs — including one last night in Toronto — 12 RBI and an on-base percentage of .420.

Cora has been enjoying watching a player as green as Campbell make such an impact right out of the gate.

“It’s been fun to watch and refreshing,” Alex Cora said on WEEI Wednesday afternoon. “I think being young and not knowing what’s going on, it actually helps him out. Everything is a first, right? From playing here in Toronto in Canada to playing in Arlington, (Texas) under the roof and playing in Fenway Park. So it’s a lot of new stuff for him.

“There’s a lot of teaching. A lot of player development. I think as an organization we understand that we have to stay on top of him because experience is not his. He’s only played one full season as a professional player. He didn’t play that much in college. So there’s a lot of new stuff that he’s seeing and he’s reacting to it. But man, it’s amazing.”

Cora said Campbell certainly still has things to work on and singled out his defense. The rookie has made three errors at second base as he acclimates to big league speed. But there’s no denying his prowess at the plate right now. The manager said the second Campbell made contact last night in Toronto, the Red Sox dugout knew he’d gone deep.

“So far man, a month in the big leagues, A+ for him,” Cora said. “He’s been amazing.”
