John Haliburton held from Pacers games after confrontation with Giannis

INDIANAPOLIS — John Haliburton, father of Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, has agreed not to attend the team’s home and away games for the foreseeable future after his confrontation with Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, a Pacers spokesman confirmed to the IndyStar on Thursday. ESPN’s Shams Charania originally reported the news.

According to the spokesman, the decision was made by the Pacers’ front office and John Haliburton was accepting of the choice. According to league sources, the situation could remain the same throughout the remainder of playoffs, but no conversations have been had regarding games beyond that.

The Pacers won Tuesday night’s Game 5 with an 8-0 run in the final 40 seconds of overtime capped by a driving layup by Tyrese Haliburton with 1.3 seconds to go. Immediately after the game, John Haliburton went on the floor holding a large flag of Tyrese. He got on the floor and turned around held it in the direction of Antetokounmpo, the Bucks’ two-time MVP.

After that, Tyrese Haliburton came toward John’s baseline courtside seats and then hugged Antetokounmpo and his father. After Tyrese left, Antetokounmpo bumped heads with John and the two had to be separated. Antetokounmpo gave John a heads up as the two were parting ways, but Antetokounmpo said in his post-game press conference that he considered John’s actions “very, very disrespectful.” Tyrese apologized for his father’s actions and John apologized on his X (formerly Twitter) account to the Bucks and to Antetokounmpo. He also told the IndyStar he was clearly in the wrong for going on the court.
