The Washington Commanders had five picks in the 2025 NFL draft, adding five new faces to the roster. Adam Peters has repeatedly been praised for how he handled the draft, and the Commanders were given high grades for their selections. One pick has been talked about more than the rest, though, and that continues today. The Commanders’ selection of Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos is one of Bucky Brooks’ top 10 player-team fits from the draft.
Finding a press-man specialist to place opposite Marshon Lattimore was a top priority for Washington heading into draft weekend. Amos fits the bill as a long corner (6-1, 195 pounds) with an aggressive game built on physicality and disruption at the line of scrimmage. The Commanders are intent on limiting layups (quick passes) and 3-pointers (deep throws) with their bump-and-run tactics.
An NFL scout’s job is to find the best players that fit what their team is trying to do. What Brooks did, essentially, was evaluate how well those scouts did. It wasn’t about when a player was taken, but which team they went to. Amos was absolutely the right pick for the Commanders, and they got a steal in the second round.
It’s not just his size, it’s also how Amos plays that factored into Brooks’ decision. He plays like the Commanders want their corners to play. Physical. Handsy. Disrupt the route to avoid the long ball. Knock down the quick throws. These are things he already does, so all Joe Whitt has to do is get him to do it at an NFL level.
The Commanders’ scouts and Adam Peters got it right with this one.
