On Thursday night, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) held its annual Future of Fashion runway show, during which students within the Fashion Design BFA graduating class presented their final looks to an audience of friends, family, press and industry mentors.
“For four years, our graduating designers have honed their skills and refined the tools they needed to best channel their creativity — and we are able to witness firsthand the results of those efforts,” said FIT President Dr. Joyce F. Brown in her remarks. “At FIT, our graduating BFA students do not just turn in final exams, they craft beautiful designs that come to life on the runway, right before our eyes.”

This year, 67 students with concentrations in sportswear, children’s wear, intimate apparel, knitwear and special occasion were selected to showcase their work. Within the sportswear category, power suiting took over in the form of raffia-embroidered pantsuits, leather patchwork jackets, cinched and frayed wool blazers or tailored denim sport coats.
That trend carried over into the children’s wear and knit categories, with an asymmetrical denim vest on one young model and structural cashmere on another. In the intimates and special occasion sections, designers embraced varying takes on corsets, inventive decorative bust cups and plenty of glitzy details.

Among the class, 13 students received FIT Future of Fashion Critic Awards, while two others won awards presented by Macy’s. Allison Margaret Smith walked away with the retailer’s Empowered Design Award, which “celebrates one student who deftly articulates their inspiration and brings it to life through their final design.” Khoboso Nale won the X Bar III Capsule Collection prize; her look will be produced in a short run and sold in select Macy’s stores this spring.
Emily Erusha-Hilleque, senior vice president of private brands at Macy’s, said in a statement, “The creativity and dedication on display at last night’s runway show illustrate our commitment to empower the next generation of designers.”
