It’s my responsibility to lead all these Dolphins rookies

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers hasn’t spent much time in his football life anywhere other than the top of the totem pole. But after joining the Dolphins as a seventh-round pick, the former No. 1 overall high school recruit and three-year Texas starter is fighting for the right to be No. 3 on the Dolphins’ depth chart.

But Ewers is getting his first bit of NFL practice time among rookies who are also battling for a spot on the roster. So he’s using the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp as a chance to show coaches his leadership abilities.

“Right now it’s my responsibility to lead all these rookies,” Ewers told reporters Friday. “It’s my opportunity to get noticed, at the end of the day.

Ewers is one of only two quarterbacks at the rookie minicamp, along with Blake Gabbert, a former Miami (OH) quarterback who is participating in the camp on a tryout basis. But even though Ewers is joining the team as a seventh-round pick, he sees the weekend as a level playing field for all the rookies in attendance.

“I didn’t expect to fall as low as I did [in the draft],” Ewers said. “But it is what it is at the end of the day and I have the same opportunity as everybody else does, and I’m beyond thankful for that. And I just want to go in there and play my game at the end of the day and learn and develop as a quarterback.”

Ewers climbing any higher than No. 3 on the depth chart before the season starts would be a surprise. The Dolphins have an entrenched starter in Tua Tagovailoa who signed a four-year, $212.4 million extension last offseason. Earlier this year, the team added former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson on a one-year, $6 million deal to be Tagovailoa’s backup.

“They’ve been there; they’ve done that,” Ewers said of the veterans on the Dolphins roster. “They’ve succeeded at the highest level in our game, in our profession. So it’s exciting. There’s really no other words to describe it, just exciting and to learn from all these veterans.”
