The NFL will officially unveil the 2025 schedule on Wednesday. Over the next few days, you will see several leaks, some true, others not so much. Last week, there were some online rumors that the Washington Commanders would face the Miami Dolphins in Spain’s first NFL game. While that may indeed be the case, as it’s been speculation for months, it’s not official until Wednesday or unless someone like Adam Schefter or Ian Rapoport says so.
Earlier this year, the NFL announced that Miami would play in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Spain. The Commanders are on the Dolphins’ 2025 schedule.
After Saturday’s rookie minicamp practice, Washington head coach was asked about the possibility of playing in Spain next season.
“Sin comentarios,” Quinn responded with a smile. “No comment. Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what to tell you on that one. We’ll see Wednesday, I guess, what happens.”
Of course, Quinn knows something. But he can’t and would not reveal that to the media. If the Commanders are one of the NFL’s international games, they’ve already been told. They may not know when, but they know if they’ll be headed overseas.
Quinn later explained more about how coaches and players view the schedule release.
“Yeah because now you know the whom and you don’t know when and that,” Quinn said. “So, through the offseason you’re looking at, ‘Okay, free agency and mostly interdivision, what changed, what hadn’t.’ And the same thing with the draft. And then as it lays out, you know, it’s a solid talking point for a day or two and then it kind of goes away but it’s fun to have that and then you just kind of get back to it. But I love the fact that they’ve built it up and have different things. We know who we’re playing, so that’s not as, you know, big of a secret, so it’s just fun to go through it.”
Quinn is correct here. It’s a good talking point for a few days, and everyone moves on to something else. No one builds things like the NFL. In what other sport does a schedule release have its own shows dedicated to it and is talked about for days, both before and after?
