With locations in Los Angeles and Phoenix, Arizona State University’s fashion school — ASU FIDM — offers a distinctly hands-on, future-facing education designed to prepare students to lead in today’s rapidly evolving global fashion industry.
Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion, a minor or three associate degrees, with the opportunity to specialize in fashion design, apparel technical design, fashion business management or fashion studies. Coursework blends technical mastery — like digital and flat patternmaking, garment construction and branding — with instruction grounded in sustainability, supply chain ethics and zero-waste design principles.
Real-world application is central to the program. At the Power Play showcase, fashion students collaborated with Phoenix Children’s Hospital to design custom “supersuits” for pediatric patients based on their personal stories and imagined superpowers. Other standout initiatives include Beyond the Lab, which challenges students to create garments using deadstock fabrics donated by partners like Supima, and a zero-waste collection by student Jill Stein that debuted during Arizona’s Sustainable Fashion Week.
ASU FIDM students also recently made national headlines when 10 students were named 2024 Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) winners — placing them among the top emerging fashion talent in the country. Their winning case studies addressed sustainability and innovation challenges in fashion. Beyond the substantial financial awards totaling $100,000, these scholarships open doors to coveted internships and networking opportunities with leading global fashion brands and retailers.
Students benefit from access to the ASU FIDM Museum’s fashion archive, robust internship opportunities with industry leaders and a high-profile annual runway show that features their capstone collections — each a culmination of design expertise, business strategy and personal storytelling.
The program also invests early in creative development. ASU FIDM’s summer camps in Los Angeles and Phoenix introduce high school students to fashion design, styling and merchandising — helping them build skills, portfolios and confidence before college even begins.
What sets the program apart is its mission-driven ethos. As director Dennita Sewell notes, “We’re helping students use fashion as a language — to communicate identity, culture and change.”
Graduates leave ASU FIDM not just with polished portfolios and industry experience — but with a deep sense of purpose.
