Rooney Mara Brought Vintage and Brand-New Glamor to Cannes Film Festival

The annual Cannes Film Festival is well underway in France at the moment, and while plenty of A-listers are bringing their best glamorous gowns to the affair, few are doing so as distinctly as Rooney Mara. In town to support her partner Joaquin Phoenix (who stars in Eddington), the star has brought her signature ethereal style to the Cannes steps—choosing two striking Givenchy looks that perfectly suit her subtle, elegant red carpet aesthetic. One was fresh off the fall runways, and the other was an archival 1950s frock.

Her first event was the Eddington premiere alongside Phoenix on Friday, where Mara slipped into a vintage dress that still felt current today. The strapless ivory dress, from the label’s Haute Couture spring 1956 collection, was complete with a back bow and delicate lace detailing. Mara is no stranger to embracing archival fashion, of course: Over the years, she has worn many winning vintage designs, including a throwback Givenchy fall 1996 dress at the Academy Gala last year.

For the Die, My Love premiere last night, however, Mara changed into a more current design from Givenchy creative director Sarah Burton. The strapless black mini A-line dress is from the designer’s fall 2025 collection, her debut line for the brand. While Mara fused the past with the present, both dresses felt classic and timeless in spirit, not to mention the fact that they fall in line with her signature love of black and white attire. It was the perfect example of doing Cannes glitz and glamor in a way that feels completely authentic to her style. And who doesn’t love a vintage win?
